Aglianico del Vulture
About the wine
Aglianico del Vulture is a distinguished red wine appellation from the Basilicata region, centered on the volcanic slopes of the extinct Monte Vulture volcano. The wine is crafted primarily from the Aglianico grape, which thrives in the unique mineral-rich, volcanic, and sandy soils of the area. These high-altitude vineyards, ranging from 200 to 700 meters, benefit from significant diurnal temperature shifts and volcanic soil moisture retention, resulting in wines of remarkable structure, longevity, and complexity. The base wine is known for its deep ruby color, intense fruity and floral aromatics, and a palate characterized by firm tannins and refreshing acidity. The DOC also includes a traditional spumante style, historically significant to the region, produced via bottle fermentation. The wines are typically released after September 1st of the year following harvest, showcasing the profound influence of the Vulture terroir on one of Italy's most resilient and noble red varieties.
