Basilicata
About the wine
The Basilicata IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Basilicata region in Southern Italy. This diverse landscape is predominantly mountainous and hilly, featuring volcanic soils in the Vulture area and clay-based formations throughout the Apennine and Bradanica regions. The climate is a mix of Mediterranean and continental influences, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations. The IGT allows for a wide range of wine styles, including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, novello, and passito versions. Historically rooted in ancient viticulture dating back to the Enotri and Greek colonization, the region is famous for its Aglianico, though the IGT permits a broad selection of international and indigenous varietals. The production standards emphasize traditional cultivation and vinification techniques, resulting in wines that reflect the specific pedoclimatic conditions of this rugged, high-altitude territory.
