Grottino di Roccanova
About the wine
Grottino di Roccanova is a distinctive DOC from the Basilicata region, named for the traditional caves (grotte) carved into the local sandstone where the wine was historically aged. The production area, centered around the communes of Roccanova, Sant’Arcangelo, and Castronuovo di S. Andrea, benefits from significant diurnal temperature shifts and varied soil compositions, ranging from sandy-limy to clay-based. The red wines are primarily Sangiovese-based (60-85%), blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malvasia Nera di Basilicata, and Montepulciano. These reds are known for their ruby color, persistent aromas, and structured, dry palate. The DOC also includes a white version, dominated by Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata, and a rosato. The Riserva typology requires an extensive 36-month aging process, reflecting the area's deep-rooted commitment to traditional winemaking practices that balance modern technical precision with historical heritage.
