Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri
About the wine
The Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri DOC, established in 2003, represents a unique viticultural enclave in the Basilicata region. Unlike many southern Italian appellations that focus on indigenous varieties, this DOC is defined by its reliance on international grapes, specifically Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrive in the high-altitude, cool-climate environment of the Agri Valley. Situated between 600 and 800 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from significant diurnal temperature shifts, which promote slow ripening and the development of complex aromatic profiles. The wines, produced as Rosso, Rosso Riserva, and Rosato, are noted for their ruby color, fruity character, and structural balance. The Riserva category requires a minimum of 24 months of aging, including at least six months in wood, resulting in a refined, age-worthy profile. This appellation reflects a historical synthesis of ancient viticultural traditions and modern adaptation to the specific pedoclimatic conditions of the Potenza province.
