Molise
About the wine
The Molise DOC, established in 1998, encompasses a broad range of wine styles reflecting the diverse viticultural landscape of the Molise region. This versatile denomination covers numerous varietal-specific wines, including both international grapes like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, and traditional Italian varieties such as Aglianico, Falanghina, and Montepulciano. The wines are produced across a wide expanse of hilly and pedocollinary terrain in the provinces of Campobasso and Isernia. The regulations allow for a vast array of typologies, ranging from still whites and reds to sparkling (spumante) and passito wines. The red wines, particularly those based on Montepulciano or Aglianico, are noted for their ruby color and harmonious, often tannic structure, while the whites offer fresh, floral, and fruity profiles. The DOC provides a flexible framework for producers to showcase the regional terroir, with specific aging requirements for Riserva typologies, ensuring a consistent standard of quality across this diverse portfolio.
