Abruzzo
About the wine
The Abruzzo DOC is a versatile and expansive appellation covering the entire administrative region of Abruzzo. It encompasses a wide range of styles, from standard white, red, and rosato wines to specialized passito (sweet) and spumante (sparkling) versions. The red wines are primarily based on the Montepulciano grape, known for its deep color and robust, spicy profile, while the white wines are traditionally anchored by Trebbiano. The DOC also highlights indigenous varieties such as Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico, which are increasingly recognized for their distinct varietal character and suitability for both still and sparkling production. The region's diverse topography, ranging from coastal hills to mountainous inland areas, allows for a broad spectrum of viticultural expressions. The regulations emphasize regional identity, requiring that all vinification and bottling occur within the Abruzzo region to maintain quality and authenticity.
