Villamagna
About the wine
The Villamagna DOC, established in 2011, represents a focused, high-quality expression of the Montepulciano grape in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. This appellation is defined by its strict ampelographic base, requiring at least 95% Montepulciano, which thrives in the specific hilly terrain surrounding the town of Villamagna and parts of Bucchianico and Vacri. The proximity to the Maiella massif provides significant diurnal temperature shifts, which, combined with well-drained sandy-clay soils, results in wines of notable structure and aromatic intensity. The wines are characterized by an intense ruby red color, evolving toward garnet, with a palate that is typically dry, full-bodied, and harmonious. The DOC includes both a standard version and a Riserva, the latter requiring longer aging to develop its signature complexity and spice notes. By limiting yields and mandating specific geographic origins, the Villamagna DOC emphasizes terroir-driven production, distinguishing itself as a refined, site-specific interpretation of Abruzzo's most important red variety.
