Amelia
About the wine
The Amelia DOC, located in the province of Terni, Umbria, represents a diverse appellation that encompasses a wide range of styles, including whites, reds, rosés, and traditional Vin Santo. The region benefits from a warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate and varied soils—ranging from marine-sediment clays to volcanic tuffs—which provide a distinct terroir for both indigenous and international varieties. The wines are characterized by their balance, moderate acidity, and clear expression of their base cultivars. The red wines, particularly those based on Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Merlot, range from approachable, fruit-forward styles to more structured 'Riserva' versions that undergo mandatory wood aging. The white wines, often featuring Trebbiano Toscano, Grechetto, or Malvasia, are noted for their delicate fruit profiles. The appellation also preserves the historic tradition of Vin Santo, including the rare 'Occhio di Pernice' style, produced through careful grape drying and extended aging in small wooden caratelli.
