Spoleto
About the wine
The Spoleto DOC, centered on the historic Trebbiano Spoletino grape, represents a distinctive viticultural identity in the Umbria region. This white wine appellation is characterized by its deep historical roots, with references dating back to Roman times. The wines are primarily produced from the Trebbiano Spoletino variety, which is prized for its robustness and ability to produce wines with significant structure and longevity. The DOC covers a range of styles, including a standard white, a Riserva, a Spumante, and a Passito. These wines typically exhibit a straw-to-golden color, a vinous and characteristic nose, and a dry, fresh palate, often with a subtle acidity that defines the variety. The production area, spanning the plains and hills around Spoleto, Montefalco, and surrounding communes, benefits from a Mediterranean-influenced climate that ensures optimal ripening. The DOC emphasizes traditional vinification practices, including the potential for skin maceration and wood aging, resulting in wines that are both expressive of their terroir and technically refined.
