Montefalco
About the wine
The Montefalco DOC, established in 1979, represents a versatile viticultural area in the heart of Umbria. While the region is globally renowned for the powerful Sagrantino grape, the Montefalco DOC provides a broader expression of the territory, encompassing both white and red wines. The white wines are primarily based on Trebbiano Spoletino or Grechetto, offering fresh, sapid, and aromatic profiles. The red wines are Sangiovese-dominant blends, incorporating a significant percentage of Sagrantino to provide structure, depth, and longevity. The production zone, characterized by varied clay-limestone soils and a Mediterranean-subcontinental climate, spans the hills around the town of Montefalco and neighboring communes. The wines are noted for their balance and clear link to the historic viticultural traditions of the area. The Rosso Riserva, in particular, requires extended aging, including time in wood, resulting in a complex, structured, and age-worthy expression of the local terroir.
