Assisi
About the wine
The Assisi DOC, established in 1997, covers a picturesque area in the province of Perugia, Umbria, nestled at the foothills of Mount Subasio. The appellation is defined by its diverse range of wines, including whites based on Trebbiano and Grechetto, and reds centered on Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Nero. The region's unique terroir—characterized by well-drained, stony soils and a favorable western/south-western exposure—imparts a distinct mineral quality to the whites and a structured, elegant profile to the reds. The wines are noted for their balance, with the reds often displaying vibrant ruby hues and notes of red berries and sweet spices, while the Grechetto-based whites offer delicate floral aromas and a characteristic almond-like finish. The DOC also provides for 'Riserva' designations for its varietal reds, requiring extended aging to enhance complexity and texture, reflecting a long-standing local tradition of viticulture that dates back to Etruscan times.
