Calabria
About the wine
The Calabria IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Calabria region in Southern Italy. This denomination is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of wine styles including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, spumante, passito, and novello versions. The region's viticulture is deeply rooted in history, dating back to Magna Graecia, and benefits from diverse orography ranging from coastal areas to mountainous massifs like the Sila and Aspromonte. The climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and concentrated autumn-winter rainfall. The IGT allows for the use of numerous grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the region, including indigenous staples like Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco, and Magliocco, alongside international varieties. Producers must adhere to traditional cultivation and vinification practices, with specific yield limits and minimum alcohol requirements defined by the disciplinare to ensure quality across the diverse landscape.
