Cannara
About the wine
The Cannara IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) covers a specific production area in the Umbria region of central Italy. Established in 1995, this denomination allows for the production of red wines and red passito (sweet) wines. The viticulture is deeply rooted in the local history, dating back to Roman times, and is characterized by traditional cultivation methods on deep, calcareous, fluvio-lacustrine soils in the valley. The disciplinare is permissive regarding grape varieties, allowing for the use of any grape variety suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region. Producers may label wines by varietal if at least 85% of the grapes come from that specific variety. The wines are noted for their balanced phenolic components and harmonious structure, with the passito style offering a richer, sweeter profile. The production is strictly regulated by the 3A Parco Tecnologico Agroalimentare dell’Umbria to ensure compliance with quality standards.
