Colli Altotiberini
About the wine
The Colli Altotiberini DOC, established in 1980, encompasses a diverse range of wines produced in the northern reaches of the Umbria region, specifically within the province of Perugia. The appellation covers a broad geographic area including communes like Città di Castello, Gubbio, and Umbertide. The production is defined by a flexible ampelographic base: white wines are centered on Trebbiano Toscano, while red and rosato wines are dominated by Sangiovese. The DOC also provides for varietal-specific labeling for Grechetto, Trebbiano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, provided they constitute at least 85% of the blend. The wines are characterized by the traditional viticultural practices of the Upper Tiber Valley, with strict limitations on vineyard altitude (max 550m) and yields to ensure quality. The resulting wines range from fresh, approachable whites and rosés to more structured, age-worthy Riserva reds, reflecting the varied terroir of the Umbrian hills.
