Costa Viola
About the wine
The Costa Viola IGT covers a specific, rugged coastal stretch in the province of Reggio Calabria, encompassing the municipalities of Bagnara Calabra, Palmi, Scilla, and Seminara. This area is historically renowned for its dramatic landscape, characterized by steep cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and traditional dry-stone terracing known as 'armacìe'. The IGT allows for the production of white, red, and rosato wines, including novello styles, as well as varietal-specific wines. The viticulture here is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, with the region historically referred to as 'Enotria' (Land of Wine). The wines are produced using grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the Calabria region. The disciplinare emphasizes the human effort required to cultivate vines in this challenging, high-altitude coastal environment, resulting in wines that reflect the unique territorial identity of the Calabrian coast.
