Lago di Corbara
About the wine
The Lago di Corbara DOC, established in the hills of southwestern Umbria near the Tevere river and the Corbara reservoir, represents a unique viticultural niche within the broader Orvieto area. The appellation is notable for its diverse range of styles, encompassing both international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Nero, and traditional Italian grapes such as Sangiovese, Grechetto, and Vermentino. The microclimate created by the artificial lake, combined with varied soil compositions ranging from marly-arenaceous to calcareous, imparts distinct character to the wines. The DOC covers a wide spectrum of typologies, from dry reds and whites to specialized late-harvest (Vendemmia Tardiva) and passito dessert wines. The reds are often described as harmonious and structured, while the whites are noted for their sapidity and delicate aromatic profiles. The region boasts a deep historical connection to viticulture, dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, and remains a significant expression of Umbrian winemaking tradition.
