Locride
About the wine
The Locride IGT covers a specific geographic area in the province of Reggio Calabria, stretching from the Ionian coast to the Aspromonte massif. This region, historically rooted in viticulture since the Magna Graecia era, features diverse terrain ranging from coastal plains to rugged hills and semi-mountainous zones. The climate is characterized by sub-humid to sub-arid conditions with significant summer water deficits, influencing the development of local viticulture. The IGT allows for the production of white, red, and rosato wines, as well as a specific Montonico passito. The production is governed by traditional cultivation methods, with a focus on regional grape varieties suitable for the Calabrian environment. The disciplinare sets specific yield limits and minimum alcohol levels for each category, ensuring the preservation of the area's traditional winemaking identity while allowing for modern technical improvements in production.
