Melissa
About the wine
The Melissa DOC, established in 1979, represents a historic viticultural tradition in the province of Crotone, Calabria. The appellation covers both white and red wines, with the latter including a 'Superiore' typology. Melissa Bianco is primarily based on Greco Bianco, while the red wines are dominated by the Gaglioppo grape, a variety deeply rooted in the Ionian coastal landscape. The production zone is characterized by hilly terrain with sandy and conglomerate soils, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate with significant summer water deficits that concentrate the grapes' character. The wines are known for their moderate acidity, typical of southern Italian viticulture, and a distinct structure. The 'Superiore' red, which requires a minimum of two years of aging, offers a more robust, velvety, and complex profile compared to the standard version. The DOC remains a cornerstone of the local economy, reflecting a long-standing commitment to traditional cultivation methods combined with modern winemaking practices.
