Ortona
About the wine
The Ortona DOC, established in 2011, represents a focused viticultural area centered on the municipality of Ortona in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. This coastal territory, characterized by high vine density and a long history of maritime wine trade, produces two primary typologies: a red based on Montepulciano and a white based on Trebbiano. The red wine is noted for its ruby color, vinous aroma with subtle spicy notes, and a structured, dry palate. The white wine offers a straw-yellow hue, delicate fruitiness, and a harmonious, sapid profile. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the influence of the nearby Maiella massif create a temperate climate with significant diurnal temperature shifts, which are essential for the development of aromatic complexity in the grapes. The disciplinare emphasizes traditional cultivation methods, including the classic pergola abruzzese, ensuring that the wines reflect the specific pedoclimatic conditions of this historic Adriatic port region.
