Palizzi
About the wine
The Palizzi IGT is a regional wine designation located in the extreme southern tip of Calabria, specifically within the province of Reggio Calabria. The production area encompasses the municipalities of Bova, Bova Marina, Brancaleone, Condofuri, Palizzi, and Staiti. This rugged, mountainous territory, characterized by clay-arenaceous soils and proximity to the Ionian Sea, is historically significant for its Greek heritage and traditional viticulture. The IGT focuses primarily on red and rosato wines, which are known for their structure and intensity. While the disciplinare allows for any black grape variety authorized in the Calabria region, it emphasizes traditional local cultivars such as Nerello di Palizzi, Castiglione, and Negrazza. The wines are typically robust, reflecting the warm Mediterranean climate and the challenging, steep terrain of the Aspromonte foothills. The production is strictly limited to this specific geographic zone, ensuring a strong link between the terroir and the final product.
