Rosso Orvietano
About the wine
Rosso Orvietano DOC is a versatile Umbrian appellation centered around the historic city of Orvieto in the province of Terni. While the region is globally renowned for its white wines, this DOC highlights the area's long-standing tradition of red wine production, which dates back to Etruscan times. The denomination is unique for its focus on a wide range of both international and indigenous varieties, including Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, and Aleatico. These wines are typically characterized by their vibrant ruby color, soft and velvety textures, and an elegant, harmonious profile. The regulations allow for both varietal wines—which must contain at least 85% of the stated grape—and blends, which require a minimum of 70% from the permitted list. The wines are crafted to reflect the diverse volcanic and sedimentary soils of the Orvieto hills, offering a sophisticated expression of this historic landscape.
