S. Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto
About the wine
The S. Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto DOC, established in 1979, represents a historic viticultural area in Calabria, centered around the coastal plains of Isola Capo Rizzuto, Crotone, and Cutro. This appellation covers both Rosso and Rosato wines, which are defined by a blend dominated by the Gaglioppo grape (40-60%), supported by a mix of local red and white varieties including Nocera, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Malvasia. The region's unique terroir, characterized by Pliocene sediments and a sub-arid Mediterranean climate, produces wines that are traditionally described as dry, harmonious, and round, with distinct fruity and floral aromatics. The production history of this area is deeply rooted in antiquity, with legends of its wine quality dating back to the Middle Ages and viticultural practices influenced by Benedictine monks. Today, the DOC maintains strict quality standards, prohibiting irrigation and limiting yields to ensure the expression of its specific geographic identity.
