About the wine

The Savuto DOC represents a historic viticultural area in Calabria, centered along the Savuto river valley on the Tyrrhenian side of the region. Spanning parts of the Cosenza and Catanzaro provinces, the appellation is defined by its rugged, mountainous terrain where vines are traditionally cultivated on steep, stone-walled terraces. The red and rosato wines are primarily based on Gaglioppo (locally known as Arvino) and Aglianico, often blended with Greco Nero and Nerello Cappuccio. These wines are noted for their robustness and historical significance, with roots tracing back to the ancient Bruzi people and Roman times. The 'Superiore' designation requires extended aging, resulting in a more structured, complex profile. The white wines, while less common, utilize a blend of Montonico, Chardonnay, Greco Bianco, and Malvasia. The area's unique pedoclimatic conditions—characterized by schistous soils and a sub-humid climate—impart a distinct character to the wines, which are typically dry, harmonious, and expressive of their mountainous origin.
