Scavigna
About the wine
The Scavigna DOC represents a niche viticultural area in Calabria, centered on the communes of Nocera Terinese and Falerna in the province of Catanzaro. The appellation covers white, red, and rosato wines, reflecting a historical tradition of hillside cultivation on clay-calcareous soils. The white wines are characterized by a blend featuring Traminer Aromatico and Chardonnay, resulting in a fresh, harmonious profile with fruity notes. The red and rosato versions rely primarily on Aglianico, complemented by Magliocco and Marsigliana nera, producing wines that are typically dry, robust, and well-structured. The name itself is derived from the Greek term for 'digging' or 'tilling,' highlighting the ancient human effort required to establish vineyards on these challenging slopes. These wines are intended for relatively early consumption, prized for their aromatic fragrance and regional identity, which has been refined through modern viticultural practices while maintaining deep ties to the local terroir.
