Alghero
About the wine
The Alghero DOC, established in 1995, represents a diverse viticultural area in northwestern Sardinia. Centered around the historic city of Alghero, the denomination is notable for its wide range of permitted varietals, blending traditional Sardinian grapes with international varieties like Cabernet, Merlot, and Chardonnay. The region is characterized by a temperate-warm climate heavily influenced by the Mediterranean and the prevailing Mistral wind, with soils ranging from limestone and dolomite to volcanic rhyolites. The wines produced are equally varied, spanning from crisp, sapid whites and aromatic Torbato to structured, age-worthy reds and specialized sweet styles like passito and liquoroso. The DOC is defined by its commitment to quality viticulture, with significant contributions from both large-scale private estates and cooperative wineries, reflecting a modern approach to Sardinian winemaking while respecting the unique pedoclimatic conditions of the Nurra region.
