Vernaccia di Oristano
About the wine
Vernaccia di Oristano is a historic Sardinian DOC, recognized as the island's first in 1971. It is a unique, oxidative wine produced exclusively from the Vernaccia di Oristano grape in the lower Tirso River valley. The wine is defined by its traditional aging process in partially filled chestnut or oak barrels, where a 'flor' yeast film develops on the surface. This biological aging imparts a distinctive golden-to-amber color and a complex bouquet characterized by notes of bitter almond and delicate floral nuances, often referred to locally as 'Murruai'. The palate is typically dry, warm, and elegant. The production requires a minimum of two years of aging, with 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' designations requiring longer maturation periods. It stands as a testament to the intersection of ancient viticultural traditions and the specific microclimate of the Oristano plains.
