Barbagia
About the wine
The Barbagia IGT covers a mountainous sub-region in central Sardinia, specifically within the province of Nuoro. This area is characterized by high-altitude viticulture, with vineyards often planted on granitic and limestone soils. The climate is among the coldest in Sardinia, featuring significant diurnal temperature variations and high wind exposure, which contribute to the wines' notable acidity and aromatic complexity. The IGT allows for a wide range of wine styles, including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante and novello versions. Production is deeply rooted in local history, with archaeological evidence of viticulture dating back to 1300 B.C. The disciplinare permits the use of any grape variety authorized for cultivation in the Sardinia region, provided they are grown within the designated municipalities. The wines are known for their ability to balance significant alcohol levels with high acidity, often resulting in excellent aging potential.
