Cagliari
About the wine
The Cagliari DOC encompasses a diverse and expansive production zone across southern and central Sardinia, including the provinces of Cagliari, Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, and Oristano. This historic appellation covers a wide range of traditional Sardinian styles, featuring Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, and Vermentino. The wines are deeply rooted in the island's complex geological history, ranging from ancient granitic formations to volcanic and sedimentary soils. The DOC is characterized by its versatility: Malvasia and Moscato are typically crafted as aromatic dessert wines, while Monica offers a distinctively soft, ruby-hued red, and Vermentino provides a fresh, sapid white with characteristic Mediterranean salinity. The regulation allows for both standard and Riserva versions for certain types, emphasizing the long-standing viticultural heritage of the region, which has been shaped by centuries of Greek, Spanish, and Italian influences.
