Girò di Cagliari
About the wine
The Girò di Cagliari DOC represents one of Sardinia’s historic viticultural traditions, centered on the Girò grape, which is believed to have been introduced during the Spanish period. This appellation covers a vast and geologically diverse territory spanning the provinces of Cagliari, Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, and Oristano. The wines are produced in both dry and sweet styles, as well as a fortified 'liquoroso' version. The standard Girò di Cagliari is characterized by a ruby red color, a delicate bouquet, and a flavor profile that ranges from dry to sweet, requiring a minimum alcohol content of 13.5%. The 'liquoroso' typology, which can be labeled as 'Riserva' after two years of aging (including at least one in wood), offers a more intense, often amber-tinged profile with a minimum alcohol content of 17.5%. The wines reflect the island's warm, Mediterranean climate and varied soils, resulting in a unique expression of a grape variety that remains deeply tied to local heritage.
