Avola
About the wine
The Avola IGT covers wines produced in the municipalities of Avola and Siracusa in southeastern Sicily. This region has a deep-rooted viticultural history, famously associated with the origins of the Nero d’Avola grape. The area is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, and soils that are predominantly calcareous with a balanced clay content. These environmental factors, combined with traditional viticultural practices, result in wines of notable structure and freshness. The IGT allows for the production of white, red, and rosato wines, including a novello style for reds. The disciplinare emphasizes the use of grape varieties traditionally cultivated in the Sicilian region, ensuring that the wines reflect the specific pedoclimatic conditions of the Siracusan territory. It is a broad designation that prioritizes regional identity and historical continuity over restrictive varietal mandates, focusing on quality through controlled yields and specific chemical-physical standards for the finished wines.
