Eloro
About the wine
The Eloro DOC, established in 1994, represents the viticultural heritage of the extreme southeastern corner of Sicily. The appellation focuses on red and rosato wines primarily crafted from Nero d’Avola, Frappato, and Pignatello. These wines are deeply influenced by the hot, arid Mediterranean climate and the calcareous-clay soils of the Siracusa and Ragusa provinces. The wines are characterized by their sapidity, robust structure, and distinctively Mediterranean profile. A notable highlight is the 'Pachino' sub-zone, which emphasizes Nero d’Avola to produce wines of greater body and complexity, with a 'Riserva' typology requiring two years of aging. The history of the area, dating back to Greek colonization, is intrinsically linked to the name 'Pachino,' derived from the Greek words for 'abundant' and 'wine.' The production remains rooted in traditional methods, yielding wines that are balanced, expressive of their terroir, and historically significant to the Sicilian wine landscape.
