Riesi
About the wine
The Riesi DOC, established in 2001, encompasses a diverse range of wines produced in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. The appellation covers the communes of Butera, Riesi, and Mazzarino, where a Mediterranean climate and marly-calcareous soils create an ideal environment for viticulture. The DOC is notable for its versatility, offering everything from fresh whites and rosés to structured Nero d'Avola-based reds and a unique late-harvest (vendemmia tardiva) style. The red wines, particularly the 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' versions, rely heavily on Nero d'Avola, often blended with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. These wines are characterized by their structural integrity, rich polyphenol content, and balanced acidity. The production rules emphasize traditional cultivation methods, including specific planting densities and strict yield controls, ensuring that the resulting wines reflect the unique terroir of this sun-drenched Sicilian landscape.
