Collio Goriziano
About the wine
Collio Goriziano, or simply Collio, is a prestigious DOC in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, renowned for its exceptional white wines. Situated in a hilly landscape near the Slovenian border, the area is defined by its unique 'ponca' soil—a flysch formation of marl and sandstone that provides excellent drainage and mineral complexity. The climate is uniquely tempered by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea and the protection of the Julian Prealps, fostering a long, stable growing season. While the region produces both white and red wines, it is globally celebrated for its aromatic and structured whites, particularly Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, and Pinot Grigio. The wines are characterized by their elegance, freshness, and distinct mineral backbone. The disciplinare allows for a wide range of varietal wines, emphasizing the site-specific expression of these hillside vineyards, which are strictly excluded from valley floors to ensure optimal quality.

Production & aging
The production zone is located in the northern hilly area of the Gorizia province, bordered by the Isonzo river to the east, the Judrio river to the west, and the state border with Slovenia to the north. It comprises approximately 1,500 hectares of specialized hillside vineyards, excluding valley floors and plains, characterized by eocenic flysch soils known as 'ponca'.
