Friuli Aquileia
About the wine
The Friuli Aquileia DOC, established in 1975, encompasses a historic viticultural area in the province of Udine, stretching from the Adriatic coast near the Grado Lagoon to the inland plains near Palmanova. The region benefits from a temperate climate moderated by the sea and the drying influence of the Bora wind, which helps maintain healthy, balanced grapes. The soils are characterized by a complex mix of alluvial deposits, ranging from sandy-clay to gravelly textures, providing a unique terroir for a wide array of international and indigenous varieties. The appellation is known for its diverse portfolio, including crisp, aromatic whites like Friulano, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon, as well as structured reds led by Refosco dal peduncolo rosso and Merlot. The wines are typically marked by their elegance and harmony, reflecting a long-standing tradition of winemaking that dates back to the Roman era, when Aquileia served as a major commercial hub for the empire.
