Friuli Grave
About the wine
Friuli Grave DOC is a broad and versatile appellation covering a vast, gravel-rich plain in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, spanning the provinces of Pordenone and Udine. The name 'Grave' refers to the characteristic alluvial, stony soils deposited by the Tagliamento River, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention, contributing to the distinct aromatic profile of the wines. The DOC encompasses an extensive range of varietal wines, including international staples like Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, and Merlot, alongside local specialties such as Friulano, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, and Verduzzo friulano. The wines are known for their elegance, crisp acidity, and balanced structure. The appellation allows for various styles, including 'Superiore' for wines with higher alcohol and lower yields, as well as sparkling (spumante) and semi-sparkling (frizzante) versions. It remains a cornerstone of Friulian viticulture, emphasizing terroir-driven expression through a wide array of white, red, and rosé expressions.
