Friuli Colli Orientali
About the wine
The Friuli Colli Orientali DOC represents one of Italy's most prestigious viticultural areas, located in the eastern hills of the Udine province near the Slovenian border. The region is defined by its unique 'ponca' soil—a complex, mineral-rich flysch of alternating marl and sandstone that provides excellent drainage and character to the wines. The area is protected from northern winds by the Julian Prealps, while the proximity to the Adriatic Sea creates a mild, temperate climate ideal for viticulture. The DOC is renowned for its diverse portfolio, ranging from elegant, aromatic white wines like Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, and Sauvignon Blanc to structured, age-worthy reds such as Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Schioppettino, and Pignolo. The winemaking tradition here is deeply rooted in history, with a modern focus on precision and terroir expression. These wines are characterized by their distinct mineral backbone, vibrant acidity, and refined complexity, reflecting the unique geological and climatic conditions of this historic Friulian landscape.
