The Friuli or Friuli Venezia Giulia DOC is a broad regional appellation covering the diverse viticultural landscape of Italy's northeasternmost region. This DOC encompasses a wide array of styles, ranging from crisp, aromatic whites—such as Friulano, Sauvignon, and Pinot Grigio—to structured reds like Merlot, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, and Cabernet. The regulation also provides for sparkling wines, including both autoclave-fermented and traditional method (Metodo Classico) versions, with a specific focus on Ribolla Gialla. The region's unique geography, protected by the Julian Prealps and influenced by both Mediterranean and continental climates, allows for significant stylistic variation. The production zone covers the entire territory of numerous communes across the provinces of Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste, and Udine in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The area is defined by diverse morphology, including hilly zones with flysch soils, permeable central plains, and a varied coastline ranging from sandy western shores to the rocky limestone cliffs of the Carso in the east.
