The Friuli Latisana DOC covers a coastal plain in the province of Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, characterized by sandy-clay soils and a temperate climate moderated by the Adriatic Sea. This maritime influence, combined with the cooling Bora wind, creates a distinct environment for viticulture. The appellation is notably diverse, encompassing a wide array of varietal wines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Pinot Grigio, Friulano, and Chardonnay. The wines are generally noted for their approachability, with the maritime terroir lending a specific balance and freshness. The DOC allows for various styles, including frizzante, spumante, novello, and passito, alongside traditional 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' designations. The production zone is located in the province of Udine, encompassing the communes of Varmo, Rivignano, Ronchis, Latisana, Precenicco, Palazzolo della Stella, Pocenia, Teor, Lignano Sabbiadoro, and parts of Morsano al Tagliamento, Muzzana del Turgnano, and Castions di Strada. This area is a flat, coastal plain characterized by sandy-clay soils and a temperate climate influenced by the Adriatic Sea.
