Noto
About the wine
The Noto DOC, located in the southeastern corner of Sicily, is a historic appellation that encompasses both traditional sweet wines and robust reds. Originally established in 1974 to protect the Moscato di Noto, the denomination was expanded in 2008 to include dry red wines, most notably those based on the Nero d'Avola grape. The region's warm, arid Mediterranean climate and calcareous soils provide an ideal environment for these varieties. The white wines, crafted from Moscato Bianco, range from fragrant, aromatic table wines to complex passito and fortified (liquoroso) styles. The red wines, primarily Nero d'Avola, are characterized by their intensity, sapidity, and fresh, tannic structure. The appellation reflects a deep-rooted viticultural heritage dating back to Greek colonization, with modern production standards emphasizing traditional cultivation techniques and strict quality controls to ensure the distinctiveness of this unique Sicilian terroir.
