Pornassio
About the wine
Pornassio, or Ormeasco di Pornassio, is a distinctive DOC from the Liguria region, centered on the high-altitude, terraced vineyards of the Arroscia Valley in the province of Imperia. The appellation is defined by the Ormeasco grape, a local biotype of the Dolcetto variety, which has been cultivated in these alpine-influenced hills for centuries. The wines are known for their vibrant ruby color, persistent vinous aromas, and a characteristic dry, medium-bodied palate with a signature bitter finish. The DOC covers a range of styles, from the standard red to the 'Sciac-trà' (a delicate rosato), 'Superiore' (requiring longer aging), and concentrated 'Passito' and 'Passito liquoroso' dessert wines. The unique microclimate, shaped by the proximity of the Alps and the Mediterranean, imparts a notable freshness and acidity to the wines, distinguishing them from their Piedmontese counterparts.
