Riviera Ligure di Ponente
About the wine
The Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC encompasses a diverse viticultural landscape along the western Ligurian coast, stretching from the province of Imperia to parts of Savona and Genoa. This appellation is defined by its dramatic, terraced hillside vineyards that benefit from a Mediterranean climate moderated by the Alps. The wines are characterized by their strong connection to local heritage, featuring indigenous and historically adapted varieties such as the aromatic Pigato, the delicate Rossese, and the structured Granaccia (Alicante). The production includes a wide range of styles, from crisp, saline whites and elegant reds to complex passito and late-harvest dessert wines. The region's unique pedoclimatic conditions—ranging from acidic quartzites to alkaline limestone soils—impart a distinct mineral character to the wines. With a focus on traditional cultivation methods and minimal intervention, the DOC preserves the identity of Ligurian viticulture, producing wines that are typically fresh, aromatic, and deeply reflective of their coastal terroir.
