Siracusa
About the wine
The Siracusa DOC, located in southeastern Sicily, is an appellation with ancient roots dating back to Greek colonization. Historically renowned for its Moscato—often cited as one of Italy's oldest wines—the denomination was expanded in 2011 to include a broader range of styles. The production zone is strictly limited to the territory of the municipality of Siracusa, characterized by a Mediterranean climate and calcareous-clay soils that favor high-quality viticulture. The DOC covers a diverse portfolio: aromatic Moscato (including Spumante and Passito versions), a versatile Bianco, and red wines based on Nero d’Avola and Syrah. The wines are noted for their balance, with the Moscato expressions offering intense, fragrant profiles, while the reds—particularly those featuring the indigenous Nero d’Avola—showcase deep color, structure, and persistent fruit. The regulation emphasizes traditional cultivation methods, such as the use of alberello or espalier systems, and prohibits forced production, ensuring the wines reflect the unique terroir of the Iblean foothills.
