Aprilia
About the wine
The Aprilia DOC, established in 1966, represents a significant viticultural area in the Lazio region, spanning the provinces of Latina and Rome. The appellation covers a diverse range of styles, including Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, and a varietal Merlot. The wines are deeply rooted in the history of the Agro Pontino, a territory reclaimed from marshes in the early 20th century by settlers from northern Italy who introduced traditional varieties like Sangiovese, Merlot, and Trebbiano. The region's Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, sunny autumns and well-drained volcanic and sandy soils, allows for steady grape maturation. The resulting wines are noted for their balance and structure: the whites are typically fresh and floral, while the reds—often based on Sangiovese with Cabernet and Merlot—offer good body and harmonious tannins. The DOC mandates specific production standards to ensure quality, reflecting a successful synthesis of historical tradition and modern enological precision.
