Roma
About the wine
The Roma DOC, established in 2011, encompasses a vast and historically significant viticultural area surrounding the Italian capital. This appellation celebrates the deep-rooted connection between Rome and its surrounding countryside, drawing on ancient traditions that date back to the Roman Empire and the Papal States. The DOC produces a diverse range of wines, including white, red, and rosato, as well as sparkling versions. The whites are primarily based on Malvasia del Lazio (Malvasia puntinata), often blended with Bellone, while the reds rely on a base of Montepulciano, complemented by varieties like Cesanese and international grapes. The terroir is defined by volcanic soils and a temperate Mediterranean climate, resulting in wines that are generally sapid, harmonious, and structured. The 'Classico' designation is reserved for specific zones within the municipality of Rome, highlighting the most traditional vineyard sites. With its focus on local varieties and historical continuity, the Roma DOC serves as a modern expression of a landscape that has supplied the city with wine for millennia.
