Colli Albani
About the wine
The Colli Albani DOC, located in the Lazio region, represents a historic viticultural area with roots dating back to Roman times. The wines are produced from volcanic soils on the western slopes of the Alban Hills, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The appellation focuses on white wines, primarily based on Malvasia (Bianca di Candia and Puntinata) and Trebbiano varieties. These wines are known for their delicate, vinous character, often exhibiting floral and fruity notes. The DOC encompasses several typologies, including a standard white, a 'Novello', a 'Spumante', and a 'Superiore' version, which requires a slightly higher minimum alcohol content. The wines are typically dry, though amabile and sweet versions are permitted, reflecting a long-standing tradition of producing versatile, approachable white wines that have historically supplied the nearby city of Rome.
