About the wine

The Montecompatri-Colonna DOC, often referred to simply as Montecompatri or Colonna, represents a historic white wine appellation situated in the Castelli Romani area of the Lazio region. Rooted in volcanic soils derived from the ancient Vulcano Laziale, the production zone benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate and favorable elevations up to 480 meters. The wines are primarily based on a blend of Malvasia (Bianca di Candia and Puntinata) and Trebbiano (Toscano, Verde, and Giallo), often supplemented by minor amounts of Bellone and Bombino. These wines are known for their pale straw color, delicate vinous aromas, and a balanced, harmonious palate. The DOC encompasses various styles, including dry, amabile (semi-sweet), and sweet versions, as well as a 'Superiore' designation and a frizzante typology. Despite a rich viticultural history dating back to Roman times, the denomination has faced challenges in modern times, yet it remains a testament to the traditional winemaking heritage of the Roman hills.
