Velletri
About the wine
The Velletri DOC, established in 1972, represents a historic viticultural tradition in the Lazio region, situated on the volcanic slopes of the Colli Albani. The appellation covers a diverse range of styles, including white, red, and spumante. The white wines are primarily based on Malvasia and Trebbiano varieties, resulting in fresh, harmonious, and often delicate profiles. The red wines, which include a Riserva typology, rely on a blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Cesanese, offering structured, velvety, and well-balanced characteristics. The volcanic soils, rich in pozzolana and tuff, combined with a favorable climate featuring significant diurnal temperature shifts, provide an ideal environment for both aromatic white wines and phenolic-rich reds. The DOC is deeply rooted in the local history of Velletri and Lariano, where viticulture has served as the primary economic and cultural driver for centuries, as evidenced by ancient statutes and long-standing local traditions.
