Benevento
About the wine
The Benevento IGT (also known as Beneventano) covers the entire administrative province of Benevento in the Campania region. This denomination is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of wine styles including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, passito, and novello categories. The region has undergone a significant viticultural transformation, shifting from high-yield quantity-focused production to quality-oriented practices. Modern viticulture here emphasizes the use of indigenous varietals like Aglianico, Falanghina, and Coda di Volpe, alongside international varieties. The area is characterized by hilly terrain with altitudes between 200 and 650 meters, featuring diverse soil compositions including limestone, sandstone, and clay. The climate is generally mild in the valleys with higher rainfall at elevated sites, providing favorable conditions for viticulture. The disciplinare allows for significant flexibility in blending, provided the grapes are authorized for the province of Benevento.
