Vesuvio
About the wine
The Vesuvio DOC encompasses a diverse range of wines produced on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius in the province of Naples. The denomination is perhaps best known for its 'Lacryma Christi' (Tears of Christ) typology, which represents the higher-tier selection of white, red, and rosato wines. The white wines are primarily based on the indigenous Caprettone and Coda di Volpe grapes, often blended with Falanghina or Greco, resulting in straw-yellow wines with delicate, mineral-driven profiles. The red wines are dominated by the Piedirosso grape, yielding ruby-colored wines with characteristic vinous and harmonious notes. The DOC also provides for varietal wines, including Caprettone, Falanghina, Piedirosso, and Aglianico, as well as various spumante styles. The volcanic soil, rich in potassium, is fundamental to the identity of these wines, providing a distinct terroir that balances acidity and structure. The 'Lacryma Christi Rosso Riserva' stands out as the most structured expression, requiring a minimum of two years of aging, including time in wood.
