Falerno del Massico
About the wine
Falerno del Massico is a historic DOC in northern Campania, rooted in the legendary 'Ager Falernus' of Roman antiquity. This appellation produces distinct white wines based on Falanghina and robust reds centered on Aglianico or Primitivo. The white wines are typically crisp and sapid, while the reds—often aged to develop complexity—are known for their warmth, structure, and intense ruby color that evolves toward garnet. The production zone benefits from a unique microclimate shaped by the volcanic influence of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano and the protective barrier of Mount Massico, which shields vineyards from cold northern winds. The soils are predominantly volcanic and siliceous, contributing to the wines' mineral character. The DOC mandates specific aging for its red and Primitivo typologies, ensuring that the final product reflects both the ancient heritage and the modern commitment to quality viticulture in the Caserta province.

Production & aging
The production area is located in the northwestern part of the Caserta province, encompassing the communes of Sessa Aurunca, Cellole, Mondragone, Falciano del Massico, and Carinola. The zone is geographically defined by the Garigliano River to the north, the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, and the volcanic and limestone massifs of Roccamonfina and Mount Massico, which create a protected, sun-drenched environment for viticulture.
